The New York Civil Liberties Union and Occupy The Hood present “Throw Away The Key”, a new video from Awkword tackling the subjects of police violence and mass incarceration. More than just a cry for prison reform, “Throw Away The Key” is an attack on the entire system of inequality and injustice that is merely exemplified by the racist, classist inequalities in policing and sentencing. The track appears on Awk’s World View, the first-ever 100% For-Charity Global Hip Hop project, sponsored by DJBooth and The Morgan Stanley Foundation. “Throw Away The Key”, produced by North of the border beatsmith L.Ment, is available for a free download below; however, viewers of NHWWW are highly encouraged to purchase the track with 100% of proceeds being donated to the World View charity Guns 4 Cameras.
New track produced by Romanian composer Dismas with bars from NYC underground heavyweight Awkword, from Volume 4 of the Sunete Sub.Sol Mixtape series. Aaron Swartz, the founder of Reddit, was systematically targeted, arrested, prosecuted and harassed by the federal government, merely for being down with the likes of Wikileaks and seeking freedom of information. 12 years after inventing RSS he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment, a victim of suicide. Awkword speaks out on the Steel Tipped Dove produced track featuring the guitar and singing talents of seven-time Grammy nominee L*A*W. As we have seen with the passing of Capital Steez and Freddy E this past year alone, it is clear we have a mental health and suicide issue in Hip Hop. This is only a representative of an even larger trend in America, with someone tragically taking their own life every 15 minutes. This ‘PSA’ is sponsored by Grassroots Suicide Prevention and will appear on Awk’s DJBooth-sponsored 100% for-charity global Hip Hop project World View. All proceeds go to the World View charity Guns 4 Cameras, a 501c3 nonprofit that goes beyond the gun-exchange program, working to eradicate street violence through the Hip Hop-inspired education and empowerment of our at-risk youth.
